THE DANGERS OF 'GROUP THINK'

But Ron, where I come from, we’ve always done it this way...

But Ron, we’ve always believed in...

But Ron, everyone I know does...

Do any of the above demonstrate intelligent individual thinking?

All the above statements imply if the majority are doing something or if its been done for generations, then it must be the right thing.

Except that we all know that isn’t always the case...

Take for instance, how acceptable it was to kill or take captive another human of another race without repercussions, until less than a 100 years ago.

Or, how acceptable it was to treat women like second class citizens until less than 50 years ago.

Or, how acceptable it still is to divide people based on nationality.

History has shown that humans are capable of being biased, inattentively blind or dismissive to any information that contradicts their traditions or way of life.

Whilst a conscious, compassionate and conscientious human being can be a great asset to the world, there is probably nothing more dangerous on the planet than an ignorant, selfish & a stupid (non -thinking) human.

Do you know that 250 billion animals are killed each year at the hands of 7.6 billion humans each year?

And only ONE species (humans) out of 8.7 million world species is responsible for all environmental & world problems.

It has been said “when everyone is thinking the same, no one is thinking”.

And, a non-thinking human being is the greatest threat to this world.

Groupthink is easy. Thinking about the impact of our individual actions is hard.

But as Dumbledore said - We must face the choice between what is right and what is easy.
